NRA Chief Range Safety Officer Course

This NRA Instructor Training Course is designed to develop NRA Certified Chief Range Safety Officers who possess the KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ATTITUDE necessary to train and supervise NRA Range Safety Officers and to provide the essential information required to develop Range Standard Operating Procedures.

Please note that effective July 1, 2018, the NRA Education and Training Division now requires that all Instructor Candidates must have completed the Basic Student Course in the shooting discipline that they wish to obtain Instructor certification.

This course is approximately eight (8) hours in duration IF the instructor candidate has completed the six (6) hour Basic Instructor Training (BIT) course.

​

Candidates must possess and demonstrate a solid background in firearm safety and shooting skills acquired through previous firearm training and/or previous shooting experience.  Instructor candidates must be intimately familiar with each action type in the discipline they wish to be certified.

​

The NRA’s Instructor Course objective is to teach you how to teach others in a specific discipline, and NOT meant to teach the instructor the basic skills of how to shoot.

Minimum Age Requirement
Certified Instructor: 21 years old
Assistant Instructor: 18 years old
Apprentice Instructor: 13 years old

Basic Instructor Training (BIT):  The BIT is approximately six (6) hours of instruction.  This course is not discipline-specific but is required to be taken by any student candidate wishing to become an NRA Instructor in any specific discipline.  By utilizing the NRA Trainer’s Guide, instructor candidates will learn NRA policies and procedures, basic Public speaking skills, training methodology, use of a training team and training aids, organizing a course, building a budget, and finally preparing to teach.

NRA Chief Range Safety Officer Course:  The course is approximately eight (8) hours of instruction.  A Chief Range Safety Officer (CRSO) candidate must be an NRA Certified Range Safety Officer (RSO) prior to attending Chief Range Safety Officer Training.  Chief Range Safety Officer candidates may complete their prerequisite Range Safety Officer training the day prior, upon prior coordination, to attending the Chief Range Safety Officer Course.

Instructor candidates will receive the NRA Basic Range Safety Officer Course Outline, NRA Basic Range Safety Officer Student Packet, NRA Basic Range Safety Officer Course Presentation CD, NRA Chief Range Safety Officer Examination, and NRA Instructor Course Completion Card.

Candidates must score a 90% or higher on the written examination.

• A candidate must not have been convicted of any felony or family violence offense.

• A candidate must not have any felony or family violence charges pending.

• Candidates must be legally eligible to possess and/or transport a firearm.
