NRA Basic Shotgun Shooting Course

Teaches the basic KNOWLEDGE. SKILLS, and ATTITUDE for the safe and proper use of a shotgun in shooting a moving target.

Details: This course is at least ten (10) hours and includes classroom and range time learning how to shoot shotguns at moving targets. Students learn NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; shotgun parts and operation; shotgun shell components; shotgun shell malfunctions; shooting fundamentals; range rules; shooting at straight away and angled targets; cleaning; and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the Basics of Shotgun Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules card, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program booklet, take a Basics of Shotgun Shooting Student Examination, and receive a Basic Shotgun Course certificate.
Students MAY bring their own shotguns for use during the course, but the shotguns MUST meet the following requirements:

MINIMUM barrel length requirement of 24"

Exceptions will be made for youth and disabled individuals.

Semi-automatic or over/under shotgun; 12 gauge is the most common, but a 20 gauge, 28 gauge, or 410 gauge shotgun will work also.

Open choke (ie: skeet, improved cylinder, or light modified).

Loaner shotguns are available, upon request, at a rental rate of $25.00.

Pistol grips or collapsible stocks are NOT allowed.

Convertible/combo/hybrid semi-auto/pump shotguns are NOT allowed.

Ammunition:

If you bring your own shotgun, you are welcome to bring your own ammunition, but no shot size larger than 7.5.

If shooting a 20 gauge, 28 gauge, or 410 gauge shotgun, you MUST bring your own ammunition.

Target loads ONLY. No shot size larger than 7.5, with the following being the acceptable shot sizes: 7.5, 8, 8.5. or 9.

(25) 12 gauge shells will be provided for this course.

A student must not have been convicted of any felony or family violence offense.

A student must not have any felony or family violence charges pending.

Students must be legally eligible to possess and/or transport a firearm.
